Newfoundland and Labrador welcomed and resettled more refugees than expected in 2016. The Association for New Canadians NL released an annual update that showed the province exceeded their target for the year by bringing in 282 individuals who are government-assisted-refugees. Things to take away from their update:
- 66 percent (188) of the GAR individuals now in Newfoundland and Labrador come from Syria
- The 282 refugees come from 8 different countries including Iraq, Bhutan and Ethiopia
- The majority of refugees that came to Newfoundland in 2016 were under the age of 18. 55 percent of GAR individuals were minors while 67 percent were 25 or younger.
- The target for NL was to bring in 250 refugees
