Newfoundland & Labrador's Forgotten '90s Sitcom Star

Newfoundland and Labrador has seen some successful actors come out of the province--most recently Mark O'Brien of Arrival and Halt and Catch Fire. But few people know that a popular sitcom star from the 1990s actually hails from the Labrador Peninsula--Mr. Peanutbutter.

Netflix's animated series Bojack Horseman was able to reveal some of Mr. Peanutbutter's backstory in its third season, including his place of birth--Newfoundland and Labrador. The Mr. Peanutbutter character has been featured on the show since its first season, and the fun-loving, upbeat yellow lab voiced by Paul F. Tompkins is the antithesis to Bojack's self-destructive, sarcastic, depressed horse voiced by Will Arnett.

For those unfamiliar with the series, it tells the story of its titular character Bojack Horseman, a washed up sitcom actor from the 90s who tries to navigate his way through the Hollywood Hollywoo lifestyle, depression and a search for meaning. It's also a world where animals can talk and mate with humans/different animals and the logistics of the world get kind of complicated.

In the 8th episode of Bojack's third season, 'Old Acquaintance', Mr. Peanutbutter travels back to his home of the Labrador Peninsula to visit his brother Captain Peanutbutter. However, the show's version of the Labrador Peninsula looks a bit different than the real thing.

Bojack Horseman is a show that loves a good animal pun, and the Labrador Peninsula being populated exclusively by labrador retrievers fits perfectly with the show's style. The series also pays extraordinary attention to detail, and there are several Newfoundland and Labrador easter eggs that you may need to press paws to catch.

Accurate Geography

This is a fairly accurate interpretation of the Labrador Peninsula from a real-life world map. But it looks like the show might be set in a dystopian world where Cape Breton Island is entirely engulfed by water.

There are a few easter eggs hidden in Captain Peanutbutter's license plate. The license plate features the Newfoundland & Labrador flag, while "DUCKLVR" is a reference to some labrador retrievers' enthusiasm for hunting ducks.

Newfoundland & Labrador Climate

Mr. Peanutbutter and his wife Diane travel to the Labrador Peninsula for New Years, but when they arrive it's warm and sunny. The radio announcer says, "Well it's another unseasonably warm day on the Labrador Peninsula, and things are looking sunny all the way to the new year. It really is true what they say: Nothing bad ever happens in the Labrador Peninsula! "

Capturing Canadian Style

Captain Peanutbutter's wardrobe perfectly captures the east coast Canadian style. From the red plaid shirt to the hat to the jeans and overalls--it looks like Captain Peanutbutter is ready to hit up Tim's before he goes to work.  He's definitely got his winter plaid on since it's approaching New Years.

Perhaps in the next season, we'll find out if Newfoundland is populated entirely by Newfoundland dogs. You can watch seasons 1-3 of Bojack Horseman on Netflix, with season 4 expected sometime in 2017.
