Appreciating The Consistency Of Bob Cole

In the 2017 NHL Playoffs, Newfoundlanders have been poorly represented. But broadcaster Bob Cole still represents the province well after a long career. Without a single player representing the province for the remaining teams, the voice of St. John's native Bob Cole still radiates through the CBC airwaves as it has for over 40 years.

Bob Cole got his start at VOCM in St. John's and has since called some of the greatest games in NHL history, along with historic moments for all-time greats from Gretzky to Lemieux to Yzerman to Crosby.

Cole, like many high-profile sports commentators, is a polarizing voice—endearing to some, irritating to others. The 83-year-old has earned such longevity as an NHL broadcaster by being—if nothing else—extremely consistent. Here's a collection of phrases, habits and moments you're guaranteed to get from listening to a Bob Cole broadcast.

"Oh baby"

Cole's signature catchphrase is only reserved for the most exciting moments. It's as iconic a catchphrase as Marv Albert's "Yes! And the foul"

'The Goalie', 'Though', and 'Scores'

These words/phrases are going to happen several times in every game Bob Cole calls. Firstly, Cole proves he knows the name of each team's netminder but chooses to call them "the goalie" at a staggering rate. No other hockey commentator does this, which makes it such a strange habit for Cole. Also, Cole's use of the word "though" is fascinating. While saying "though" is common for all broadcasters, both the delivery and frequency with which Cole says the word is iconic. Meanwhile, Cole takes a simplistic approach to someone scoring a goal. Cole will say "Scores" more often than not. It's simplistic, yet effective and why change something that works for you?

Awkward Transition Into Commercial

There's usually going to be one of these per game. These aren't easy to do and many sportscasters struggle with them—no one more than TNT's Reggie Miller—so Cole limping into a commercial or two per game isn't that big of an indictment.

Nostalgia

Whether you love or hate Bob Cole, hearing his voice on CBC or Sportsnet in the NHL Playoffs is like going through a time machine. Cole has called so many historic games over his 40-year career that his commentary will take you back to moments that still resonate years or decades later.
